Cone 10R Tenmoku Glazes

Tenmokus should be viewed at a base glaze with iron oxide addition. Adjusting the iron affects the melt fluidity, depth and variegation of color.

Notes

*This uses the G1947U base transparent recipe and adds 10% iron oxide. We used this for many years. However, the 10% iron makes this very messy to work. The iron also gels the slurry making it difficult to apply evenly and causing problems with cracking during drying.

Notes

*Alberta Slip is almost a tenmoku by itself. This small addition of calcium carbonate and iron produce a little more melt fluidity and better crystallization of the iron. Of course, like any tenmoku, thickness must be controlled: Enough to get the visual effect but not so much that it runs.

Alberta Slip, as a base for a tenmoku, it a very good choice because so little added iron is needed.

Notes

*Same recipe but with a little more iron oxide. Perfecting the amount of iron is just a matter of continuous use and experimentation in your circumstances.

We found that this can crystallize more heavily when applied more thinly on porcelains.

Notes

*Ravenscrags slip is a clear glaze by itself, with a little extra help to help (by adding the calcium carbonate) it has better melt fluidity. Like a normal tenmoku, this adds 10% iron.

However it is too melt fluid, the whiting should be reduced to 5 or eliminated.

Notes

*Less calcium carbonate, this had less problems with running than G2894. Later, we went a little further, reducing the calcium carbonate to 3. Getting the right recipe will just be a matter of fine-tuning this amount.
